Why Should I Know About Blood Conditions?

When something is wrong with your blood, it can affect your total health. That is why it is important for you to know about some of the common blood disorders that may affect you.

People may be affected by many different types of blood conditions and blood cancers. Common blood disorders include anemia, bleeding disorders such as hemophilia, blood clots, and blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma.

Talking to your doctor is the first step to take if you believe you may have a blood condition. If you are diagnosed with a blood disorder, your doctor may refer you to a hematologist.

What is Hematology?

Hematology is the study of blood in health and disease. It includes problems with the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, blood vessels, bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, and the proteins involved in bleeding and clotting (hemostasis and thrombosis). A hematologist is a medical doctor who applies this specialized knowledge to treat patients with blood conditions.

About Me

Dr Debmalya Bhattacharyya, one of the young haematologist and hemato-oncologists of Kolkata practises consultative hematology and oncology in Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals Kolkata since 2016.

He did his MBBS from NRS Medical College, Kolkata and then MD in Internal Medicine from SCB Medical College, Cuttack through All India Post Graduate entrance test. Then he achieved the degree of DM in Clinical Haematology from the Institute of Haematology and Transfusion Medicine, Medical College Hospitals, Kolkata. His MBBS, MD and DM degrees are recognized by the Medical Council of Inida and presently he has been enrolled under the West Bengal Medical Council. He is an International Member of American Society of Hematology and Life member of Indian Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion.

Dr Debmalya has a colourful academic career since his school days. He has presented many abstracts in both national and international conferences.

He also got an opportunity to work as an observer in the Leukemia Department of MD Anderson Cancer Center, Texas, USA (one of the worldwide premier Institute for cancer patients).

Dr Debmalya treats patients with all types of blood related disorders including blood cancers like acute and chronic leukemia, Lymphoma, Myeloma. He has comprehensive training in performing all complicated chemotherapy protocols and procedures including bone marrow aspiration & biopsy. He is also member of the Bone marrow Transplant team of Apollo Hospital, Kolkata.

He is an expert in treating thalassemia patients along with anemia, haemophilia, ITP and other bleeding disorders and consultative hematology.
